Trying to start a conversation with someone you are interested in could be the hardest thing to do. You can think it through clearly in your head, but when finally approaching the individual, everything you rehearsed seems non-relevant.

Just talk about anything.  They’re buying dog food - what breed do they have? How many? In other words, take an interest in people. The more you practice showing interest in just everyday ordinary people, the easier it is to show interest in people you’re attracted to. You’ll already be in the habit of noticing things you can comment on.
Taking a public speaking class helps too, it is great for getting you used to thinking on your feet.
